HAMLET SUMMARY ACTS I & II
The story starts off with Bernardo, Francisco, Horatio, and Marcellus at their post talking together about the ghost they had spotted. However, this wasn’t just any ghost, but it was the ghost of the past King, father of Hamlet, who had been killed frequently. They discuss how he had been killed and how they believe his spirit still here due to some possible unfinished business. Then we get to know the new King of the kingdom, Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle. He married his mother and took over the kingdom. They feel that mourning the Kings death shouldn’t take to long because the Kingdom needs a leader to move on and deal with the issues of the kingdom. Claudius and Queen Gertrude urge Hamlet to let go of the clouds that surround him from his father’s death, yet he truly isn’t dwelling on that but rather he thinks of his traitorous mother whom married his uncle with no hesitation. She had mourned his father’s death for less than a month. Afterwards Horatio, and Marcellus go to tell Hamlet of who they had seen and left him with the urge to see his father.
In the next scene after those two Ophelia, Polonius, and Laertes talk about Hamlet's love toward Ophelia while both Polonius, and Laertes call her a fool for falling for his affections for he may love you know but later he may not. Horatio and Marcellus bring Hamlet to the place where they had seen his father. When the past King comes and motions that Hamlet come to him, but Horatio and Marcellus warn Hamlet that his spirit might be guiding him to death though Hamlet  ignores their warnings and goes toward him believing it is his destiny to do so. So Horatio and Marcellus follow him to protect him from possible harm. As Hamlet talks to his father he finds out that he was murdered by his uncle who now has the throne. His father tells Hamlet to avenge him, but do not attack his mother because the heavens will judge her so there is no need.
In act 2 Polonius and Ophelia talk about how Hamlet is going mad from love so they seek the king for his guidance. While they do this Hamlet meets up with the actors of plays and asks that they do a certain play for the next day. This play, however, is very similar to what his uncle did to his father to take the throne. Hamlet is going to use use this play as possible proof that his uncle really murdered his father for if he flinches or reacts a certain way it will move forward his plan of avenging his father.
