DECONSTRUCTING MACBETH

In Shakespeare’s story, Macbeth, the characters whom live here are accustomed to a powerful monarchy. They followed their king with all their heart doing whatever he bade. One day when their king died things started to fall into the hands of chaos. Macbeth became their new king and well they weren’t completely reassured by that fact. As king Duncan’s sons fled Macbeth led the blame to them though people were not completely sold. Later, people began to understand Macbeth's crimes and were finally relieved to hear that the murderous Macbeth was dead and that the original glory of the kingdom was brought back to the way it was supposed to be. Though as his people turned against him Macbeth’s wife surrendered her life. After discovering this Macbeth said the following. “She should have died hereafter. There would have been a time for such a word. Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow Creeps in this petty pace from day to day To the last syllable of recorded time. And all our yesterdays have lighted fools The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle. Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.” These words hold a great significance to the story. These words say that life means nothing.
Of course, he starts by mentioning Lady Macbeth’s death saying that, “she should have died hereafter. There would have been a time for such a word”, meaning that she would have died some time anyway and he would’ve heard of it”. This means that despite the great love they had for each other all that time was nothing now to Macbeth saying that her death would have come some day anyway it’s fine that she died today since he still would’ve heard of the news some other time. Then he goes on to say that the days pass by with each day bringing him closer to death, “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow Creeps in this petty pace from day to day”. Then he goes on about how life, after all that one does, means nothing and signifies nothing no matter what you do. That we all are like actors anxiously practicing, readying themselves for the act they play and once their act is done, they are forgotten, “a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, And then is heard no more”. He then uses this as an example to life stating that, “It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing”, which he means to say that the stories of life are idiocy and all these things we do, things we feel, rage, jealousy, loyalty, are just noise that happens but in the end means naught a single thing. They were just sounds, noises that broke the silence only for a moment.
All this was just to make the point that despite everything Macbeth did, all the chaos brought, was all but a sound that had broken the silence, a life wasted in an effort that led to nothing, an impossible hope for something better that had only led him to his doom. Macbeth finally gave up on life and the foolish joke that made him and all the people in the world. They were just there to live and play their parts and then vanish from the world they knew to be forgotten in time.
Macbeth summed up the story with his gloomy view on life since it had been all that he thought it gave him. His speech showed only his most negative remorseful feelings. He didn’t feel sad that his wife died he just said, oh well. Then he went on and used words like, “creeps, petty, fools, dusty death, walking shadow, poor player, frets, told by an idiot, signifying nothing”, to give off the tone of Macbeth feeling miserable to the audience.
Overall, these words just served to show us how Macbeth had now fallen to his misery and befell to his own hopelessness; no longer expecting more from life. This was the last thing he felt since he had no more to feel. All the chaos and carnage his hands caused had now come back to show its ugly face for him to see in all its horrendous glory. These were his final outlooks for his life.
