BNW CHAPTER 8 NOTES
This chapter was mainly about John's and Linda's life. This chapter touched upon how it was difficult for Linda to adapt to life with the savages. Linda would drink some kind of liquor or beer in replace of soma. Many men would come for erotic pleasure with Linda and john did not like all the men who would come. Angry women would of course come and punish Linda for allowing their husbands to cheat on them.
Linda did not treat John the way she should have at first since she had no love to give to her child and that night when the women came to hurt her John wanted to comfort his sad mother, but Linda was angered by his comforts and slapped him. Though she came around and gave John kisses instead of slaps one day. Linda was depressed most of the time missing her past home. John found tat she was happiest when she would talk about it. Of course the normal kids in the neighborhood would bully little John since his mother displayed behaviors that were considered uncivilized in their culture.
Linda would teach John how to read and gave him her book on embryos so he could practice. Later on she found some of Shakespeare's works and gave them to John to read.(Huxley chose the quote allusion to exemplify to the clashing differences of the two world and how drastically different their beliefs are) Linda though it was uncivilized and nonsense. Shakespeare's words made John feel powerful. This somehow helped John establish his hatred towards Pope. He developed the will to kill Pope and one day he used the meat knife to stab Pope. After that he continues on with his story and tells Bernard and Linda about the time he stood with his arms outstretched to feel what Jesus felt when he was crucified and his scar which of course made bernard squeamish. in the end Bernard offered to take John  to London to which he over joyfully accepted and asked if he could take Linda too. To which he hesitated a bit, but said yes after realising a few things.
