BNW CHAPTER 8 IDEAS
Bernard had asked John to tell him about his life in the savage reservation. John starts off by telling them of the moment Pope wanted to go to bed with Linda, but Linda had said that not with John there. pope dragged John out and closed the door while John shouted for Linda, but Linda did not answer. And, well this wasn't the only person Linda would share the bed with which had angered the wives of the men who went to her for sexual pleasure. These women beat Linda which did not make Linda repent for her crimes but rather felt that the people were beastly and unfair. John was caught in the crossfire and was hit by the women's whips. Linda in order to drown her sorrows on the reservation drank some kind of liquid drug like alcohol or beer which Pope would bring her as her replacement of soma. Linda somewhat neglected John not washing him and feeding him cold tortillas. However, Linda did help him learn how to read and for his birthday gave him a book with complete works of Shakespeare which granted him the ability to be able to hate Pope since it revealed to him what anger and hatred was. I believe the story chose to allude words these words from Shakespeare "Nay, but to live
In the rank sweat of an enseamed bed,
Stew'd in corruption, honeying and making love
Over the nasty sty …" because it connected with the stories plot so far with how the World State's people act. Then huxley used "When he is drunk asleep, or in his rage
Or in the incestuous pleasure of his bed …" as a guide for John and how to guide his hate toward Pope which ended with him stabbing Pope. Then Pope held John down to make him look into his eyes and laughed when John started to cry and then let him go.
John always felt alone because the rest of the kids outcasted him due to the color of his skin and his weird "she-dog" mother. They would throw stones at him and outcast him. He and Bernard concluded together that if someone is different they end up lonely. To John did that he stood in the sun as if he were crucified and no one else had done. His reason for doing so was because he felt he should have since Jesus had done it,he felt like he did something wrong and he had felt unhappy. Bernard did propose to John if he would like to come to London and John happily said yes he asked if Linda could join and Bernard agreed after some thought. John also asked if Lenina and Bernard were married. He was happy to know he wasn't and wanted to go to the New World straight away.
