BNW CHAPTER 12
The chapter starts with John not wanting to come out for Bernards meeting. Many were of course anticipating the meeting and were very disappointed to know that he would not be coming. lenina had been a part of this group of people and was hoping to tell John that she loved him, but ended up feeling rejected by making herself believe that John didn't want to come because of her. Many of the members turned their anger toward Bernard again talking about he had alcohol in his surrogate and how the director was going to send him to Iceland and so on. Bernard was humiliated this day was supposed to be a crowning moment of Bernards whole career was a huge embarrassment. Again Bernard was warned to fix himself and was left alone at the stage. Bernard felt terrible and weeped, but stopped himself and took soma. Bernard directed his sadness to anger and revenge which would be for the savage and Helmholtz.
When Bernard met with Helmholtz once more he found out that he was being threatened as a pollutant of society the reason being is because he wrote a poem on lonesomeness and the principal threatened him. Though this made Helmholtz feel like if he were using the power within him and felt happy about it to Bernards surprise.
Later he introduced the savage to Helmholtz and they instantly attracted. Which naturally made Bernard jealous since he had never been that close to the savage. John would read Shakespeare and Helmholtz loved it until John read Romeo and Juliet. He though it ridiculous about how hard he made having a girl be because it was simple but family and culture had made it too ridiculously difficult. John understanding the plight was outraged and locked the book back in the drawer because he understood that it was a difficult task not a simple one. In the end one Helmholtz laughter had finally died down he said that Shakespeare's writing was good, but he needed something different from what was written something more potent.
I believe that the feeling that Helmholtz is looking for is revolution; a work that can bring the people, the government against each other and tear apart what conditioning made people believe.
